Apple released iBooks Author 2.3 Tuesday, an update that allows the software to make ebooks that can be read on an iPhone. The company did so by adding two new ePub templates that work with iPhone. Apple Books (formerly iBooks, between January 2010 to September 2018) is an e-book reading and store application by Apple Inc. For its iOS and macOS operating systems and devices.It was announced, under the name iBooks, in conjunction with the iPad on January 27, 2010, and was released for the iPhone and iPod Touch in mid-2010, as part of the iOS 4 update.

Unsurprisingly, iBooks Author's.ibooks-format ebooks still get the majority of the cool gimmickry available in the app; to build an ePub-compatible book, you have to first choose an ePub template. Keeping with the basic ePub 3 standard, ePub templates remove floating text boxes, charts, shapes, and all widgets beyond the gallery and media boxes. Earlier this year, Apple finally took the big step and gave iBooks Author 2.3 the capability to export EPUB (see “Updates Expand iBooks Author’s Reach,” 10 July 2015). This version was used to create the enhanced Harry Potter editions.

About iBooks Author

iBooks Author will no longer be updated, and it is no longer available to new users. If you’ve previously downloaded the app, you can still access it from your App Store purchase history. You can continue to use iBooks Author on macOS 10.15 and earlier, and books previously published to Apple Books from iBooks Author will remain available. You can also open and edit iBooks Author files (.iba) in Pages.
