Backstage: Making the Melodies

Posted by The Toontown Team on September 7, 2014 at 2:00 PM

Welcome to the next entry of Toontown Rewritten's ToonFest backstage column! I'm the lead composer over here at Toontown -- you may know me as a little red cat named Cool Peaches. Unlike Kati and Joey, the authors of the other Backstage posts thus far, I actually haven't been part of the team since the beginning, which gives me some pretty great stories to tell.
Today we're going to hit the road and check out some history with the team, such as how I've gotten here, what I’ve worked on… You know, maybe I can even sneak in a new song I've written! Oh, but don't let Joey know. As much as Sir Max disobeys the Toon Council, Joey sure is a stickler for keeping things secret until they're released.
So, let’s get this show on the road, shall we?

The New Toon in Town

My time here on the team first began in February, where I was a complete stranger to everyone! (Unlike many team members, which were referred by friends.) Believe it or not, I made it straight onto the team just by sending an email to support showing off some of the compositions I've made in the past. After four days of selecting samples and anxious waiting later, I got a response from none other than Joey himself. It turns out that the team had been searching for a composer right when I sent my email, and I was given a little test: Write three jingles for an upcoming event that had been in planning.
Some hours later, I had completed all three and sent them off to see what they thought… …and got a response that probably made it one of the proudest moments of my life: Joey telling me that the songs basically guaranteed me a spot on the team. Those three songs were completed without any tweaks necessary, and later became Slappy's Theme during the Toon Council Presidential Election.
The next day, I received the first project I would work on as an official member of the TTR Team, and the biggest track I have worked on yet: Setting the tone of Doomsday.

Creating a Cogtastrophe

The hugeness of the Doomsday melody is definitely a stark contrast with those first three jingles that took a few hours. I'd believe that this piece clocked in at a month! …Okay, that’s not entirely true. According to my computer, the time between the first version of this piece and the version that made it in game was a mere 4 days, but I don't even want to count how many hours it was. I swear, I remember this piece taking weeks!
In any case, the big burst of a theme that I wrote for Doomsday took a lot of researching to put together. This wasn't just any ordinary Cog battle, this was the Cog battle that decided the fate of Toontown, and I wasn't going to let it run dry! There were tons of mash-ups put in there, from a standard Cog building floor to the theme of the CJ Battle. If you listen closely, you'll even hear a few unused themes.

Tunes for Future Toons

Everything you heard during Doomsday was composed by myself, my personal favorite being what I think is the best piece I've ever written: the credits theme. That won't be so true for the next event, though.
Just like I was picked up, we managed to pull another Toon onto the team named Yorke who has been helping out with composing plenty of themes for upcoming events. In fact, you'll get to hear his debut track right here at ToonFest! He has composed the entire event this time around, and I can tell you that you're going to love it.
I've been wrapped up in composing things for a later event, but I know you Toons can be pretty eager to hear something new. Did you know that Daisy Gardens doesn't actually have music when you go into a shop? It just reuses the street theme, unlike other Playgrounds. I've been working on a piece recently to put in there, and YOU can help shape it up before it goes in game! Give it a listen by clicking the picture to the right, and let me know what you want to be improved before I send it over to Minnie to be used as an official melody.
My role is to write music over and over and over again until I’ve done an appropriate job realizing the scene that it accompanies. It can be a slow job at times, but it’s all worth it!
Joining the TTR team was probably the best decision that I have ever made. It pretty much finalized my decision to become a professional composer, gave me a reason to do well in school, and deepened my interest in music ten-fold. Being here has made me a much better person, and I wouldn’t trade my position here for the world.
If you have a dream: Whether it's to compose music, become an artist, or even one of the developers of Toontown: Don't give up! My chances of getting onto the team were one in a million, but I was that one. You can be too! I want to take the little space I have left to thank every one of you who has been following the project since it's early days (Just like myself at the time!), as well as all of my fellow team members who have made my experience the best it can be.
You Toons are the best, and make being here all the more worthwhile! Hope to see you at ToonFest!

As a violinist, I really love the theme for Daisy's Garden, and I can really appreciate your work! The only problem with the theme, a VERY SMALL problem, barley a problem at all, is that it's a tiny bit too... let's say 'graceful.' I know, I know, Daisy's Garden is supposed to be fancy and garden-y and graceful, but it's just a tad too much. I would also love to know the program you use to compose your music! I would love to mess around with it. That's all I can say for now. Keep up the good work Cool Peaches and the rest of the Toontown Rewritten Team! Keep it up! I'm telling you, someday, all of this will come to use. The important part is that you all have had fun making the game. I guess NOW is all I can say... for now. If i could be a squirrel in Toontown, my catchphrase would be 'Chip chip and away!!!!!'

I just wanted to let you know, both on here and kind of on Youtube, that I think your music is great. I am not a composer or even slightly musically inclined, but I understand how tough it can be to come up with anything, from scratch or otherwise, and that it's even harder to make it sound great, so you have my respect and admiration. You've done a really great job so far, and I can't wait to hear the other songs/pieces you come up with. :D

Wow, you're the one who created the elections theme, huh? Great job on it! It's my most favorite theme of all time (so far!), surpassing even the themes that have been around for ages! Keep up the good work! About your proposed indoor Daisy Gardens music, I do have a small suggestion: To me it doesn't feel like it fits the INSIDE of a shop/building; if it's going to be used at all in Daisy's, why not make it the new street music and make the current street music stay as the indoor music? I think it'd work better as that! Just my thoughts :)

Another great addition to the Backstage column! I liked the election music immensely, but the daisy gardens one, not so much. To be fair, I didn't like Daisy Gardens at first in Toontown Online, but I grew to like it later. I'm not sure I like how complicated the music track is, but maybe it's more about how pretentious the song sounds--like it's looking down its nose at you. I think I'd roll my eyes every time I hear the song. And for a shop it feels too open and not exciting enough. Normally, the small shops sound smaller and more intimate. It's different than the other playgrounds operate, but you could turn it into a good thing. If you want it to be a slower song, then I think it STILL needs to be changed. To be more... relaxed. More of a refuge from the outside. The kind of sigh of relief you feel from a hot hot summer day where you walk inside your home and the wall of cold air conditioning just rushes over you. That's the kind of feeling you'd want to distill. I suppose there's nothing wrong with intricate game music, but if you're going to make it different than the others, make it like that's the way it's SUPPOSED to be. Now that I think about it, the obnoxious part I don't like is the 7th flute note in the song. It's LIKE it's out of tune but not really. Da da dun da da dun dun DAAaaAAhhHHhh... It's the 'DAAaaAAhhHHhh' part. Again, I didn't like Daisy Gardens at first (maybe I assumed it would be too girly? Or maybe that was Minnie's Melodyland?...) so take that as you will. In the end, I'm sure the song will be awesome and the fact TTR would even try to do this is awesome. :D

That is amazing how you were the 1 in a million. My daughter loves writing music and I keep telling her never give up. She doesn't know how to play any instruments yet or actually put the beats to it but she writes really good lyrics. She just puts what she feels down in writing and makes it into a song. Thanks for the inspiration and advice and thanks for being apart of a great game. Hope you all will make it better than before and trust me it was great already. I believe that this time around it will be better. Please never take ToonTown down again. Plus the music is awesome!

I LOVE the Doomsday theme! The Daisy Garden shop song is awesome as well, but I think it would sound pretty jarring going from the playground song to that. I love them both, but they don't mesh seem to mesh very well :/ I agree with Fireheart's description of being too 'graceful' and I would add that it's a bit over the top, only in comparison to the Daisy Garden song. The shop theme you've composed is almost orchestral, and Daisy Garden's playground theme is a pretty simple piece. That being said, I'm in awe of your musical talent, to just come up with something basically from scratch. I couldn't do that in a million years. Bravo!
Soft Paws said on September 8, 2014 at 4:19 PM
YES!!!! I was literally waiting for the TTR team to show the composer for the songs played in the game. I love music! And by the way, I listened to your tracks and they were a-m-a-z-i-n-g! I myself play the viola and the violin, and may attempt cello. This really strengthens my dream to make my music known to others. (yes, I write my own music :P) I love the melodies you add to the game, they go so well the setting! Keep up the dream of composing, I bet you'll be toontastic at it, and thank you for sharing your story of how you got on the team, it really shows that even when you don't except something it can happen. Your dreams can come true. I'll make sure I catch you at Toonfest and maybe we can have a one-on-one music talk. Lol. So long for now and keep up with the good work TTR! I love hearing all your stories, your hobbies, and everything in between. Most of all, thank you for reviving the game we all love. (If they are any errors in there, I'm sorry. Me tired!!!) { ~Soft Paws~ }
